Garvald at the Scottish Bread Championships

On Saturday 24th February some Garvald Bakery staff enthusiastically attended the Scottish Bread Championships at The Bowhouse, St Monans (The Bowhouse is ' a food and drink hub and rural venue'' based in the East Neuk of Fife,  which hosts farmers markets and the like especially at weekends.)

This is an annual event which is organised and sponsored mainly by The Bread and the Scottish Food Guide. The competition is aimed at small artisan type bakeries and enthusiastic amateurs dedicated to the production of Real Bread. It is also part of the Real Bread Week 'an annual, international celebration of additive free bread and the people behind its rise’ that is usually held in late February.

Products submitted for the competition are tasted by a prestigious panel of judges who award gold, silver, and bronze awards if they decide that they merit such for whatever class the product is entered under.

This is the first time that Garvald Bakers have entered this competition, and we also had a stall to sell some of our products. We were extremely gratified to receive the following awards:

Gold for the Chilli / Chia Seed

Silver for the Sesame and

Silver for the Herb and Pumpkin Seed varieties

Silver for our Sourdough bread (amidst some pretty stiff competition).

We would like to thank the joinery workshop at Gorgie and Garvald for providing some lovely props and accessories for our stall  (our stall attracted a flurry of customers after the results were announced!). A big thank you to all bakery staff and members who worked really hard to produce extra oatcakes and bread for the event.
