Orwell Arts Celebrate May Day in Style

Orwell Arts gathered in their garden to celebrate May Day.

The workshops came together to share their contributions. Katherine, a member from the weaving workshop, opened the celebrations with a presentation about the history of May Day, and taught the group how to sign ‘Maypole’. Her fellow weavers also performed a poem called ‘May’.

Dhaoud from the Media Workshop presented a quiz that he had prepared especially for the occasion.

“The ribbons of the maypole were bright and colourful like a rainbow.”

The workshops celebrated in style, with people wearing handmade hats decorated with flowers. A panel of judges decided on the winners, who received bunches of flowers as their trophies!  “The ribbons of the maypole were bright and colorful like a rainbow,” says Kieran, who works in many of the building’s workshops. “The hats were like the bright yellow sun.”

The music group, who rehearse every Tuesday at Orwell Arts, played 'Daydream Believer’ by the Monkees while everybody danced together around the Maypole.

As is Orwell tradition, the dancers tied Ramon and Michael to the Maypole with their ribbons. “I watched Ramon get tied up last year,” says Michael, who wanted to try it this year for himself. “Ramon helped me, because I didn’t do it by myself.”

The celebration was complete with sweet treats made in-house by the talented bakers in the Kitchen Workshop.
