Spring Has Sprung at Mayfield House!

JP Murphy, “It was good! I love doing it!”

We hosted our first ever Spring Fair at Garvald Edinburgh Mayfield House. We were blessed with sunshine and warmth from the sun and also from our many friendly visitors. Craft goods made by members were on sale and the Kitchen operated as a café.

All the workshops were open, and our guests could try out some of the activities that members do during the week. In the pottery a massive pot with wonderful decorations made with the sgraffito technique was created as a communal project. The pot will now be fired and go on display. The Jewellery workshop offered beading. Textiles offered pompom making, embroidery and weaving. The Garden Group facilitated willow stripping and peg loom weaving using natural sheep’s fleece. This method is used to produce our new product: The Shillow - a lightweight woven pillow made from 100% natural hand dyed fleece. It is a comfortable, dry and warm seat for a rest or picnic on any walk. In our new Art and Print workshops guests made their own designs using the printing press. Everyone enjoyed our new garden feature with raised beds full of tulips and integrated wooden benches. Families with children enjoyed the ‘snail trail’ and the ‘chuck the chicken’ challenge.

The day worked well as a fundraising event and as an open day. Many friends and families enjoyed having a look around, try some of the activities and sample the Kitchen workshop’s tasty food (including our famous scones).
